Anyone who has experienced a Lake Michigan summer vacation will likely tell you there are many things to do on the water. From boat rides to beaches, our stretch of the “North Coast” has much to offer visitors and locals alike. Still, finding the best opportunities for you and your crew can sometimes be overwhelming—especially if you’ve never been in our neck of the woods. There’s also a chance we have activities that may not come to mind. So, to jump-start your itinerary, we brainstormed five ways to spend time on the water when staying with Unsalted Vacations.

Fishing on Lake Michigan and Beyond

When you think of fishing in West Michigan, it’s easy to imagine pulling in massive salmon and lake trout from the side of a large vessel. While that is an accessible possibility, there are also several fishing opportunities for those wishing to explore inland. Either way, fishing is an excellent way to get out and connect with the great outdoors at a slow pace—and you may even get some dinner out of it. Places like On the Fly Charters, FishGH, and Campbell Outfitters are professional guide services that will take the guesswork out of where to go. Otherwise, if you’re confident, you can surely go fishing at one of the piers, from shore, or a secluded riverbank.

Boating and Sailing

Whether you plan to bring your own, rent one, or let someone else navigate, you must consider boating during your Lake Michigan summer vacation. It allows you to get out and see the communities from a different perspective and gives you a sense of freedom as you cruise along one of the world’s largest lakes. It’s also an excellent time to relax, take pictures, and make memories.

Paddle Away

Consider kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding for a self-powered boating experience that doubles as a workout. Paddling away on Lake Michigan is a bucket list item for some outdoor enthusiasts, but Lake Macatawa, the Kalamazoo River, and the Bangor-South Haven Heritage Water Trail are worthy considerations.

West Michigan Beaches

No Lake Michigan summer vacation would be complete without at least one trip to the beach. Even if you don’t want to go in the water, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Whether you want to dip in for some swimming, try boogie boarding, or simply soak up the sun (or watch it set), there are plenty of nearby places to do it. Check out one of our blogs showcasing the 13 Best Lake Michigan Beaches and take your pick.

Splash Pads

So this might be bending the rules a bit, but let’s face it—not everyone wants to hang out at the beach, go fishing, or kayak down a river. Thankfully, there are a bunch of splash pads and water parks for kids and kids at heart to enjoy. We did a Google Maps search for splash pads near Holland, Michigan, to point you in the right direction. All you have to do is move around the map and choose the best one for your group!

If you consider yourself an avid angler, you probably know why Lake Michigan charter fishing is a bucket list item for some. His love for the lake has translated into wildly successful outings for him and his guests, thanks partially to his 31’ Tiara Express Cruiser that can seat up to six anglers.

With full-featured navigation electronics and guidance from one of the best in the business, you’ll be well on your way to reeling in a diverse range of fish, including highly-sought salmonids like coho and chinook salmon, and rainbow, lake, and brown trout. All you need is a fishing license, snacks, drinks, and a cooler to store freshly caught fish, which Captain Christ will gladly fillet for you for free!

When we think about a West Michigan vacation, we often imagine sprawling beaches, water-based activities, and seasonal events. Although those are awesome things to do here, one aspect of a getaway in our neck of the woods that some may not consider is how it can improve wellness and overall mental health. Studies have long shown that just taking a break from the day-to-day can help improve your well-being, and when you take the opportunity to address your health, it becomes even more effective.

Spending time in nature, visiting a wellness center, or treating yourself to some alone time are just some ways to elevate your quality of life. Thankfully, all those things and more are accessible when you stay with Unsalted Vacations. Let us show you some of the wellness benefits of a West Michigan vacation and how to maximize it.

Relaxation and Stress Reduction

One of the apparent benefits of taking a West Michigan vacation is the chance to tune out, relax, and reduce the stress that comes with work, school, and other obligations. For some, that simply means finding a change of scenery; for others, it’s a process. For example, you may put your phone on silent mode, keep the television off, and avoid other digital distractions to allow yourself to live in the moment. Also, many will opt to read, write, or work on art projects. Still, you may wish to do nothing besides just be, and that’s completely understandable. No matter your choice, you can feel good knowing you’ll be far away from the hustle and bustle when staying here.

Fitness and Healing Arts

Many vacationers prioritize physical activity and exercise in their itineraries. Exposure to new experiences in a different place can stimulate the brain, boost creativity, and allow your mind to do a soft reset. Whether you prefer laid-back sports like fishing and golf or strenuous endeavors like biking and kayaking, our area has plenty to offer. At the same time, if you’re looking for ways to revitalize and rejuvenate or improve your mindfulness, places like Black River AcupunctureWest Michigan Wellness, Dutch Roots Yoga & Wellness, and Satya Yoga are just a few of the many local options.

Improved Sleep Quality

Taking away the cognitive impact of life’s hustle and bustle can lead to a more relaxed psyche, which in turn leads to better sleep. Moreover, suppose you’re consuming less caffeine and junk food than usual and engaging in more activities. In that case, you may also find more restful sleep (it also doesn’t hurt that our vacation rentals have extremely comfy bedding). Vacations are so effective in improving sleep quality that CNN Travel has an article about the rise of sleep tourism.

Creating Memories and Forging Bonds

A West Michigan vacation often involves spending time with family and friends. Strong social connections are linked to better mental health. Sharing experiences, creating memories, and enjoying quality time with loved ones during a vacation contribute to a sense of belonging and emotional well-being. If you’re a solo traveler, you can apply these concepts to meeting new people or finding a particular place of interest.
